440C Stainless Steel Round Bar

Grade 440C is occasionally referred to by its UNS name, alloy S44004, by suppliers and manufacturers.  A type of stainless steel belonging to the martensitic family is the JIS SUS 440C black bar alloy. The properties of the 400 series also apply to this alloy. 

The chemistry of the 440C stainless steel round bar is recognized to have the highest carbon content of any of the 400 stainless steel series. The heat treatment process usually results in the 440Cc stainless steel welding rod achieving a hardness of 58 to 60 HRC. Manufacturers frequently apply an oil quenching treatment to the alloy 440C.

Optimizing the hardness qualities of the ASTM A479 UNS S44004 hex bar can be achieved through oil quenching. The heat treatment of the grade ASTM A276 type 440C flat bar improves not only its hardness but also its mechanical strength and wear resistance. One feature of this alloy grade is that the AISI 440C threaded bar resists corrosion and can retain a sharp edge after it has hardened. 

Furthermore, by ordering a process as basic as polishing, an almost mirror-like quality can be obtained.  The moderate corrosion resistance qualities of 440C stainless steel rods are well recognized, particularly when compared to alloy 304 when contrasted with austenitic grades. 

While heat treatment is a viable method for hardening this grade of stainless steel, machining is the preferred method when working with DIN 1.4125 square bars. This is due to the fact that machining stainless steel 440C brilliant bar is simple while it is annealed, but it becomes much more challenging after the alloy is hardened.
