Blind flanges, slip-on flanges, weld neck flanges, and plate flanges are all types of flanges. Each one has a particular purpose in the pipe system. Stainless steel 316 has a higher molybdenum concentration, which enhances corrosion resistance, especially under chloride conditions. It is one of the most often used alloys, with grade 304 coming close in terms of commercial relevance. When exposed to a variety of severe climates and environments, 316 stainless steel flanges show excellent corrosion resistance. Although 316 SS flanges are deemed “marine grade,” they are not resistant to warm seawater. When exposed to warm chloride conditions, the SS 316 flanges are prone to pitting and crevice corrosion.
At temperatures above 60°C, chlorine-related stress corrosion cracking occurs in stainless steel S31600 flanges. The 316 SS glide-on flange connects two seamless pipes at a precise location by allowing the tube to glide onto the flange. Forged and rolled flanges with fittings, valves, and other high-temperature components must fulfill 316-grade requirements. The material can endure temperatures up to 870 °C.
The suggested temperature for the SS 316 Flange in an operation requiring continuous support is roughly 925 °C. Continuous use of 316 stainless steel flanges at temperatures ranging from 425°C to 860°C is, however, not recommended. If the alloy is anticipated to be resistant to corrosion in water, this only applies to SS 316 flanges.
